Lloyd H. Astmann of Paramus, N.J. and Wellington, Fla., a Franklin Pierce University trustee and class of 1969 graduate, and the managing partner of NHA Realty, LLC, a New Jersey based commercial real estate holding company, has been named Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Franklin Pierce University, President James F. Birge announced.
“I am excited about Mr. Astmann’s leadership of the Board of Trustees and that he is the first alumnus to serve as the Chair,” said Dr. Birge. “Lloyd’s commitment to his alma mater is remarkable and noteworthy. He is an exemplar of Board leadership and I am confident that his term as Chair will contribute to our thriving academic community.”
“Franklin Pierce was there to help and guide me when I needed it most,” says Astmann. “It has been rewarding, fun and educational staying involved in and working with the institution for all these years. I feel blessed, privileged and honored to be able to serve as Board Chair and look forward to giving back and making a difference at Franklin Pierce through working with my fellow trustees, the administration and, of course, the alumni body.”
Astmann and his wife, Helen, also a ’69 Franklin Pierce alum, were instrumental in founding the Franklin Pierce Alumni Association. He served on the Alumni Board from 1974 to 1981. In 1980, Astmann began his service to Franklin Pierce’s Board of Trustees as the Alumni Association Board president. In 1990, he was awarded the Alumni Participation Award and in 2004, Mr. and Mrs. Astmann received the Alumni Leader of Conscience award.
In other recent Board news, the University Board of Trustees is proud to announce the election of three new members to the Board; Barry Jay Cooper of Alexandria, Va., Carleen Farrell ’71 of Arlington, Mass. and Jean D’Meza Leuner of Orlando, Fla.
Cooper, deputy managing director of APCO’s Washington Office, brings extensive, real-world communications experience to the Board including stints in senior positions in the White House, the U.S. Department of Commerce and at Yale University. He earned his bachelor of arts in journalism degree from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. and is the proud parent of a Franklin Pierce graduate, Kathryn J. Cooper ’00.
Farrell is rejoining the board after having served from 1981 to 1994. She brings to the board a wealth of higher education experience including 21 years at Harvard Business School where she served as Director of Enrollment and Admission Services and other capacities. Farrell is the past recipient of the Alumni Participation Award (1989), Leader of Conscience Award (2006) and served on the Franklin Pierce Alumni Board of Directors from 1971 to 1979 and as its President of 1974 to 1976. She earned her Master of Arts degree from New York University.
Leuner is Dean and Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Central Florida. Leuner earned her Ph.D. in curriculum instruction and administration from Boston College in Boston, Mass.
