Teaching Statement:

My classes are oriented towards teaching proficient technical skills, while concurrently developing critical & creative thinking. Each new technique a student learns becomes both a tool with which they can execute and materialize their vision, as well as a device that informs and renews the direction and possibilities of their work.  My intermediate and advanced assignments are open-ended, allowing me to work with students both individually and as a group to navigate through a multitude of ideas and approaches. I try to stay in tune with the individual concerns of each student, showing work and presenting ideas to them that are both in sync and at variance with their own.  I plan my classes to have set structures, while allowing for flexibility as I evaluate the needs of the students. Through group critiques and individual discussions, I promote meaningful art practices, and work with students to explore a breadth of reasons for how and why work is made.  It is my objective that students feel encouraged and are excited to work towards creating developed, mature work while at the same time feeling free to explore various possibilities and to take risks. Above all it is my goal that my classes impart firm knowledge and problem-solving skills that will prove useful to any art- and design-related field.
