The following degree/certification options are solidly based in "best practices" research and action-based learning experiences to help graduates gain employment in the field of education as caring and supportive educators for standards-based 21st century teaching and learning environments.
Programs are offered in multiple delivery formats, hybrid or 100% online, at the University’s Concord, Portsmouth and Manchester Centers. Several programs may be accelerated or decelerated to meet the needs and personal lives of our students. “Pathway” opportunities from undergraduate to graduate education are available for Franklin Pierce students.
Master of Education Only
|Concentration in Curriculum and Instruction with Optional Focus in “Literacy for the 21st Century”
This is the perfect program for students who are already certified but who wish to obtain an advanced degree in the field of education, while adding to their knowledge base in the area of curriculum and instruction, with an optional focus on literacy. This program is also designed to prepare students not interested in teaching in K-12 settings where certification is required, but who desire an advanced degree in Curriculum and Instruction in order to work in other types of education related settings.
Master of Education with or without Certification
|Master of Education in General Special Education K-12
Numerous options and employment opportunities are available in this critical shortage area. The M.Ed. degree in General Special Education without certification is designed for individuals who have earned a baccalaureate degree and are already certified in a concentration area or those who are not certified, but desire an advanced degree in Special Education to work in related settings which do not require certification. In addition, for those who majored in other content areas and are not certified to teach, or those who want additional certification in special education, the M.Ed. in General Special Education with Teacher Certification is a perfect choice. (Offered as M.Ed. only, M.Ed. with Certification, or Certification only.)
|Master of Education with Certification in Elementary Education K-8
This program is designed for career changers who come from a variety of backgrounds in business, psychology, science, computers, humanities, etc. and have a strong desire to pursue a professional career in the field of education for the 21st century. It embraces cutting edge practices in the areas of literacy, technology and research. It allows for teaching in a wide variety of content areas including math, language arts, science, social studies, computers, art, and music. (Also offered as M.Ed. or Certification only.)
|Master of Education with Certification in Middle/Secondary Social Studies 5-12
It is recommended that students in this program have an undergraduate degree and/or background in a social studies discipline such as history, economics, geography or civics/government. This program is perfect for someone who is passionate about our American society and the implications of our past, the relationships of the U.S. within the global community, and desire to share that passion and knowledge with learners in the 21st century. (Also offered as M.Ed. or Certification only.)
|Master of Education with Certification in Middle/Secondary English 5-12
It is recommended that students in this program have an undergraduate degree and/or background in English, language arts, journalism, and/or communications. This program is designed for someone who loves literature and the art of literacy to include reading, writing, listening, speaking and the use of technology to enhance these skills. Individuals who wish to be literacy coaches, English teachers, and/or reading and writing support personnel will find this program a good fit for their background. (Also offered as M.Ed. or Certification only.)
|Master of Education with Certification in Secondary Life Sciences 7-12
It is recommended that students in this program have an undergraduate degree in biology/life sciences or other related areas of science. This program is designed for someone who may have originally thought of entering the field of science as a clinician, nurse, doctor, or other health professional but has decided a career in teaching would better suit him/her. There are critical shortages in this field of education today and employment opportunities are widely available. (Also offered as M.Ed. or Certification only.)
|Master of Education with Double Certification
Opportunities for double certification are available to students wishing to pursue a more intensive program for increased employment options upon graduation. Many of our students have successfully combined Elementary or Middle/Secondary programs with General Special Education.
