Campus Sustainability Day: "Sustainability 101" Guest Panel and "Resilient Campuses & Communities" Keynote Broadcast

Category: Events and Activities
Venue/Location: Fitzwater Studio/Control Room 106
Date: Wednesday, October 23, 2013 - 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM

The Sustainability Center and the Fitzwater Center for Communication invite you and your classmates, teammates, office mates and colleagues to celebrate Campus Sustainability Day at Franklin Pierce.

Campus Sustainability Day, an annual celebration of sustainability in higher education at institutions throughout North America, recognizes "the achievements of, and challenges for, the tens of thousands of students, faculty, and staff working to instill sustainability principles in higher education institutions and their surrounding communities." (

The theme for Campus Sustainability Day (CSD) 2013 is Climate Adaptation: Resilient Campuses & Communities.” CSD provides the perfect scene for Franklin Pierce University's "Sustainability 101" speaker panel event - which is also the kick-off for “Voices: Engaging Communication in Sustainability,” a year-long, student-run media campaign designed to help students "find their voice" in sustainability.

The "Sustainability 101" speaker panel at 12:30 will cover topics such as energy, leadership and management in sustainability, economics and related issues. Guest panelists include Bev Edwards, Chair of the Temple Energy Committee and Chair of the Monadnock Energy Resources Initiative, a grassroots, non-profit organization that helps communities in the Monadnock region build energy independence and strengthen their sustainability, and Megan Kennedy, a graduate student in the Sustainable Development and Climate Change program at Antioch University New England, whose internship with the Monadnock Food Co-op focused on sustainability through four lenses: Environmental, Economic, Social, and Managerial/Leadership.

Following the guest panel, participants will have the opportunity to connect with a larger national audience via the "Resilient Campuses & Communities" keynote broadcast, hosted by Second Nature. The broadcast will deliver "a discussion from higher education and climate leaders on the role of campuses in adapting to a changing climate, innovations in climate resilience and mitigation, and community partnerships.  The broadcast will feature presentations and a discussion from panelists, touching on leadership and practical issues related to campuses, community, and addressing both opportunity and responsibility in a changing climate." This event is brought to you by Pierce Media Group, through a New England Campus Sustainability Forum mini-grant.
