Presentation Title: "Beyond the Page: Artistic Representations of Literary Texts"
Abstract:
Literature is only one way to communicate. There are many ways to convey perspective and derive meaning from a piece. The medium that communicates ideas to its audience influences how information is received. My project, Simeon Mills’ and Kaylee Geheeb’s explores the relationship between literature and art and how an artistic reputation of a beloved text may lead us to have a better understanding and appreciation for the work. In my presentation, I will share an original video based on Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day.” My video will encapsulate the ideas and themes of the sonnet and provide visuals that coincide with the poem’s imagery. My intention is to create a visual representation that makes the Shakespearean language of the sonnet easier to comprehend and to create a visual story that accurately represents the sonnet. My presentation will include a synopsis of the sonnet and background information to provide context, a showing of the video, and an explanation of the how and the why behind it. I hope that this project will create a more accessible way to approach Shakespeare and create a way for people to enjoy one of his most famous sonnets.
