Presentation Title: "By Her Hand"
BY HER HAND features estranged sisters Germain and Nali. Having missed out on much of each other's lives -- including death, trauma, and secrets, in rare moments of quiet and reflection, the sisters recall the sweet closeness of their early lives and wonder if reunion is possible. Nothing of the sort is possible without the careful reading of each sister's diary, without reckoning with the damage done by the patriarchal Catholic Church of their childhoods, and without escaping to an island off the coast of Maine. They are not the young women they once were. Much has changed. There is much to regret. Rejecting mansplaining priests and virginal saints like Maria Goretti in favor of bold painters like Artemisia Gentileschi and rebellious writers like Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, the sisters aim for authenticity -- earned through rage, forgiveness, and hope.
