Presentation Title: "Designing A Sustainable Campus"
Abstract:
NES240 Sustainable Communities is an experiential, hands-on course designed to help students understand and take action on the issues related to sustainability. Scientists, philosophers, economists, politicians and ordinary citizens across the globe agree that humanity now faces a “crisis of unsustainability”. This semester the focus is the FPU Rindge Campus. Working groups in the class have divided the FPU Sustainability Development Goals (a subset of the UN Sustainable Goals or SDGs) into three broad categories - 1. Social Justice, 2. Environmental Quality, and 3. Academic Process. Through empathy and concept mapping students have developed core issues that would lead to a sustainable campus, in all its aspects. To involve all actors on campus in the decision making process of these core issue we propose a charette to take place during the Academic showcase. Everyone (students, professors, staff, administration, facilities, coaches, etc.) will be invited to participate in mapping and adding to the core issues generated by the students. The final outcome of the class will be a report on the outcome of the charette.
