Presentation Title: "The Global Water Crisis"
Abstract:
As the human population grows and the climate warms, patterns of water use and impacts are shifting dramatically. The ES367 Water Resources class has researched water crises around the globe. Teams of students will provide an overview of critical water problems, and updates on potential solutions to on-going and significant challenges to survival of human populations and native biodiversity. Topics discussed will include water quality issues, including contamination of the water supply in Flint, Michigan, the Three Gorges dam and water pollution problems in the Yangtze River, China, and decades of industrial contaminants and nutrient pollution in Lake Michigan. As dry areas get drier, and wetter areas get wetter, water supply and flooding concerns are intensifying as well. Students will outline the battles over water in Israel, as well as drought and flood problems in areas such as the Nile River, the Amazon River, and central California.
