Presentation Title: "The Prosecution of Child Sex Offenses"

Abstract:

Every nine minutes there is an incident of child sexual abuse. In the United States, one out of four girls will be sexually abused and one out of thirteen boys will be sexually abused. While not an easy topic to talk about, the statistics clearly indicate that it is an issue needing to be address. Not every case is reported and the cases that are reported only a fraction of them will be prosecuted. The purpose of this presentation is to examine the steps to a successful prosecution when dealing with child sexual abuse victims. It will outline the procedures in these prosecutions as well as how to deal with the challenges unique to child victims. There will be a case example to provide greater insight into how the court system deals with these sexual offenses. Learning and educating the public can hopefully inform people to help address this pressing issue.
