Linkedin Learning in the curriculum

LinkedIn Learning is a professionally curated video library with courses in leadership, professional development, creative media, and information technology. Its courses are designed for in-depth and just-in-time instruction at various skill levels.

The platform also offers some of the same courses in German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Mandarin or Brazilian Portuguese languages.

The content hosted in LinkedIn Learning is often not created for or by anyone at FPU, so please review the materials before assigning them to your students.

Why Use LinkedIn Learning?

LinkedIn Learning offers high production and well crafted supplemental materials / just in time resources on a wide variety of topics. LinkedIn Learning may offer additional resources or supports for your students in specific technologies and soft skills such as presentation skills, public speaking, leadership, project management, Microsoft Excel, Tableau, Power BI, and many more.

Leveraging LinkedIn Learning videos, courses, learning paths, and collections can provide instructors with supplemental content to support student learning in transferable and marketable skills and tools. Likewise, students can connect their LinkedIn Learning accounts with their personal LinkedIn user profiles to earn and share badges that demonstrate their completion of LinkedIn Learning course materials.

LinkedIn Learning courses and learning paths also often come with ready made and available "exercise files" which users can use to follow along with the videos where applicable.

Use Cases for LinkedIn Learning

A non-exhaustive list outlining what faculty can use LinkedIn Learning to facilitate in the online portions of their courses include:

Sharing LinkedIn Learning playlists on public speaking and presentation tips with the class prior to the final presentation assignment
Assigning LinkedIn Learning videos on Microsoft Excel for remediation after a homework problem set
Referencing project management learning paths on LinkedIn Learning at the start of a semester long project
Encouraging students to watch a collection of videos on group work and leadership before starting a major group project

How do I use LinkedIn Learning in my course?

If you know what content you would like to include in your course, directions for integrating that content into Canvas is below. If you are unsure or would like a curated list of resources specific to your course, please complete this form: LinkedIn Learning Request and you will be sent a list of curated resources for your consideration.

Canvas Integration

LinkedIn Learning content (full courses or videos) can be integrated into a Canvas course. LinkedIn Learning can be embedded as Assignments which can be included in the gradebook. LinkedIn Learning content can also be included on Pages or Discussions. The directions below guide faculty through adding LinkedIn Learning as an assignment.

Start by navigating to the "Assignments" section in the course navigation and click the "+ Assignment" button to begin creating the Canvas Assignment.

Fill in the "Assignment Name" in top text box. You can later align this with the name of the Linkedin Learning assignment you select.

Points - Set the number of points the assignment is worth. If ungraded, enter "0."

Set the "Display Grade as" field to "points" or if ungraded, "complete/incomplete".

Set the "Submission Type" to "External Tool," and click "Find" under the "External Tool Options."

You do not need to check the "Load This Tool in A New Window" box as LinkedIn Learning will load within the frame of Canvas if you do not want your students to leave your course page.

In the "Configure External Tool" pop-up box that opens, scroll down the list of available external tools to click on the magnifying glass icon next to "LinkedIn Learning" Once clicked, press the "Select" button.

In the "Link Resource from External Tool" pop-up box that opens, you will be able to use the "Search for content" bar to search and find the content you wish to bring into Canvas.

Select "Add" next to one of the items within the list of available materials. Once clicked, press the "Confirm" button.

In the "Configure External Tool" pop-up box that opens, press the "Select" button.

Scroll down to the "Assign" settings and set the due date and availability dates so that your students know in Canvas what is expected from them. The benefits of adding LinkedIn Learning Content into Canvas as an assignment are to give your students due dates, and/or to make the content visible only to specific people or sections.

In the Canvas assignment, click the "Save & Publish" button at the bottom of the page to create the Canvas Assignment.

What will my students see?

Students will click on the link in your Canvas course and a new tab will open to the specific LinkedIn Learning content you chose to share with them, whether that be a specific video, an entire course, a learning path, or a private collection. Student view will look different depending on the setting when creating the assignment within Canvas.

The list of videos will be visible on the left-hand side under the "Contents" menu, while additional resources like the video "Overview," "Q&A" forum, personal "Notebook," and a running "Transcript" are available toggles below the video player. Likewise, the option to show and view resources like any applicable "Exercise Files" are also available under the "Related to this Course" header.

Notice, within the embedded option, student will be able to see the "Due Date" and "Points"as defined in the Canvas Activity in the top banner.

LinkedIn Learning (LiL) can be used as a complement to your current curriculum. There are many options already available to recommend to your students, or you can curate custom collections to fit your specific needs. This information is designed to assist you in that role.
